Picking the Right Pediatrician with Texas Children’s Hospital Pediatrics

This year marks the moment I will become a mom of two, and my heart and soul are so ready for it.  I remember when I had my daughter Sofia.  I was full of emotions and unknowingness, because honestly most first time parents all feel the exact same, and this time around, I feel ready to take on the new challenges and excited to share
with you how to find the right Pediatrician for you and your family.

5 TIPS FOR PICKING THE RIGHT PEDIATRICIAN

1. PLAN BEFORE BABY IS BORN
Research!! When I started looking for a pediatrician the first thing we did as a family was look at our network through our insurance and make sure that the doctor was accepting new
patients.  From there I utilized family, friends and social media networks and groups to reach
out to fellow moms and parents on who they chose as their pediatrician and why.  In addition,
you want to make sure you consider the location, hours and after hour options.  This is
definitely vital for our family because you want to be close enough to your pediatrician that if
anything were to happen, you can see them very quickly.
2. CHECK CREDITANITALS
By utilizing your insurance information as well as online research, you can
allow yourself time to check on your potential pediatricians credentials and ensure they have
completed all the training pertaining to the care of infants, children and adolescents.  You can also check that theyre board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.
3. ARE THEY UP TO DATE ON CURRENT PRACTICES?
Medicine and health care practices change rapidly and staying current with the most recent
research ensures the best care for your family. For example, parents were once told to swab the
umbilical cord stump with alcohol after every diaper change, but recent studies show this
practice might actually delay the natural healing process. Current practice is to keep the area as
clean and dry as possible, using plain water and drying it with a clean cloths.
4. DO THEY A FIT FOR YOUR FAMILY?
Prior to the baby arriving you can meet your pediatrician and get to know them.
This will give you a chance to get that first impression and see if he or she will be the right fit
for your family.  Ask them all the questions you have because they
will be your advisor when caring for your new baby and you want to make sure you can
confidently have them care for your child and family.
5. HOW DOES THE DOCTOR INTERACT WITH YOUR NEWBORN?
Now that you have finally chosen the pediatrician you would like to potentially care
for your newborn, it is time for the initial meet and greet process.  When this happened with
Sofia, I took these questions into account:
1. How did he/she act when they initially came into the room?
2. How did he/she react to meeting the baby for the first time?
3. Did the pediatrician make you and your baby feel like family?
4. Did the pediatrician ask questions about the birth and how mama was doing?
5. Did he/she listen to all your questions and make you feel confident and comforted?
Though these might not work for everyone, I am thoroughly invested in having a
pediatrician who makes me feel like family.
WHY I CHOSE TEXAS CHILDREN’S PEDIATRICS FOR MY CHILDREN
With my second child arriving in the next 12 weeks, I knew that I would continue to utilize Texas
Children’s Pediatrics for my child’s care needs.  From the moment we arrived at
our Texas Childrens Pediatrics location pregnant with Sofia, our doctor made us feel like a part
of the family.  She always had an answer for anything we
asked, so no question felt silly, she made us feel safe, and when
she met Sofia after she was born, she took care of her as if she was her own.  This type of care
and special feeling was exactly what I wanted for my babies and for our family.
So whether you are planning for your first child, second, third or more, I hope that
what I shared today makes it that much easier and makes you feel more confident in the next
stages of life you are about to encounter. 🙂
